The word spa is derived from the ancient Belgian work “espa” which means spring fountain.  Around the 14th century in Belgian there were numerous natural healing hot springs that had a natural healing power.  While this is where the word spa is derived this is not where the use of spa’s and hot tibs began.  The concept of bathing in heated waters for therapeutic purposes has been present for many centuries.  As early as 2000 B.C. Ancient Egyptians were using spa like baths for relaxation and therapeutic treatment.   In addition the ancient Greeks used  minerals in their hot baths to promote healing and relaxation.  It was in ancient Greece that spa’s were made public and they were placed in public gymnasiums so that athletes could relax after an intense work out, and also for hygiene.   Spa’s have greatly developed over time.

In the 1950’s the first hot tubs appeared in America made of oak barrels and wine tanks from local wineries.  By the 1960’s larger tubs were created from wood and sold.  They were often times homemade and incorporated wood burning heaters.  In addition these newer tubs came equip with a circulation and filtering systems that was derived from that of a swimming pool.   Around this same time it was found that these hot tub’s could be used to sooth those suffering from intense arthritis and other muscular health issues.  These new hot tubs began to be incorporated into local spa treatment facilities and were often used alongside saunas to promote cleansing and relaxation.  In the 1970’s hot tubs began to be created out of fiberglass and acrylic.  These were the first hot tubs to contain a fully functioning control system and even jets.  In addition around this time hot tubs were designed to hold multiple people. While the hot tubs of the past were designed for one or two people, newer versions could hold upwards of 15 people.

Since the 70’s not a lot has changed in the production of hot tubs and spas.  They are still made from fiber glass and all contain a functioning operating system that controls circulation, filtering systems and jets.  Most commonly hot tubs are purchased in packages that contain all the essential elements you will need to keep your tub functioning.  Hot tub packages usually include the tub itself, a cover to keep your tub safe from the elements, and the chemicals you will need to maintain the appropriate minerals and chemicals in the water.  More expensive kits can include accessories and other hot tub products that come in helpful.  When purchasing a hot tub, in a kit or not, most commonly the company will deliver the tub to your house and set it up correctly.

To keep your hot tub in the best possible shape there are many spa supplies and products that need to be purchased.  Most supplies will help your hot tub run efficiently by keeping it clean and keeping the chemicals at appropriate levels.  Chemical and mineral build up in hot tubs is the number one reason for malfunction or permanent damage for hot tubs today.  Many tub owners do not understand that constant maintenance on their hot tub is mandatory to keep it in good condition.  Caring for your hot tub is relatively easy and will prevent larger problems that can occur with improper upkeep.  We suggest reading in your manual exactly what your spa requires to maintain good condition.  Your manual will tell you the right chemicals and cleaning products that are to be used for your specific spa.  Of course these things cost money and can get quite pricey but it will prevent problems that are equally expensive.  Taking proper care of your spa from the get go will save you money in the long run as well as ensure you always have a place to kick back and relax.
